History

Creekwood Christian Church was organized in 1992 as a new church start of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  The North Texas Area of the Christian Church, its sponsoring body, wished to respond to the rapid population growth in the communities of Flower Mound, Lewisville, Highland Village, and Coppell.  It was assumed that many Disciples of Christ families were among those new residents, as well as numerous families without a church home who would be well served by a Christian Church close to their neighborhood.

A Project Advisory Committee of 12 persons representing six congregations was formed in July 1991 to guide the process.

A seven-acre piece of land was purchased in Flower Mound in January 1992, and Richard L. Spleth was called as minister in May 1992.  He began serving the new congregation in August 1992, assembling a core group of interested persons who worked alongside the Project Advisory Committee to plan the first worship service on December 6, 1992.

Creekwood met for its first 28 months in the Garden Ridge Elementary School in Flower Mound using the cafetorium of the school as it worship space, and the hallways for Sunday School classes.  In April 1995 it occupied 7200 square feet of leased retail space in the Meadow Glen Plaza of Lewisville, which provided space for worship, fellowship, education, and administration.

A permanent building of 10,000 square feet was built in 1998 and occupied in November of that year.

The congregation has grown steadily through these years as shown in the following chart:

These numbers are consistent with the growth that was anticipated in "The Next Step" document in 1995 which foresaw an average worship attendance of 250 as the first building was occupied, an average attendance of 375 by the time of the construction of the second unit, and an average worship attendance of 500 by the time of the construction of the sanctuary.  The current total membership is 435 persons and there are approximately 1,000 persons who are now "related" to the congregation.

Temporary buildings were added in late 2000 and in late 2001 to accommodate the growth of the congregation.  A new capital campaign was begun in June of 2001 to finance the addition of a second temporary building and to begin acquiring funds for the down-payment on a second unit--an expansion of educational facilities.  It is feasible that a sanctuary might need to be built with occupancy occurring around 2006.  This level of is consistent with the growth patterns of other mainline Protestant congregations in the community.

In the summer of 2001, Pastor Rick Spleth was called to a Regional Minister position with the Disciples in the Indiana region. A search committee, chaired by Mike McCollum was formed to begin the search for a new senior minister.  One of the committee's first actions was to call Jerry Kirkpatrick as interim pastor to help guide the congregation in it's search for a new "settled" pastor.

On February 10th, 2002, at a specially called board meeting, the search committee made a recommendation to the board to send a letter of calling to Tommy Thompson of Bethany Christian Church in Houston.  The board unanimously approved this recommendation and then on February 24th, the congregation also unanimously approved the call.  Tommy began serving as Creekwood's first called minister on June 1st of 2002.
